Moving up from Gold Plated jewellery is Gold Vermeil. It is better quality, will have a longer life and isn't going to bring that skin irritation.
Gold Vermeil is essentially a sterling silver base with the gold 'painted' on via electroplating process. Depending on what you hope to get out for your jewellery, this is higher quality than a Gold Plated piece, and it will last longer for you.
Then we move up the quality ladder to Gold Filled Jewellery, it's a pressure and heat bonding process, referred to as being 'melted on'. Let's explore this further.

It will not peel or flake with reasonable care and should last as long as solid 14k gold jewellery. The bonus is that it is safe for most people with metal allergies. It is often lead and nickel free and due to the higher gold content, they are hypoallergenic.
Essentially, it is an affordable alternative to solid gold that outdoes the quality and lifespan of Gold Plating significantly. Gold Filling can last as long as, or close to, pure gold with the correct love and care.
